American Scholarships 2009 2010: PhD Scholarships in Biomaterials for Cochlear Implants

2 PhD Scholarships in Biomaterials for Cochlear Implants
The University of Queensland
With Cochlear Ltd and Aortech Pty Ltd

PhD Scholarships in Biomaterials – Next Generation Insulation for Cochlear Implants
Currently, soft silicone materials are employed as insulation for implantable Cochlear electrode arrays. However these materials have limited tensile properties and tear resistance, thereby significantly hampering the scope for new and more complex electrode array designs. The central aim of this project is to explore new insulation materials with similar flexibility, biocompatibility, biostability and electrical insulation to silicone, but with far superior tensile and tear strength.

This will be achieved through the development of biomedical polyurethane nanocomposites via a collaboratively- conceived and executed project featuring significant cooperation between researchers at UQ, Cochlear Ltd (Sydney) and Aortech Biomaterials (Melbourne). PhD 1 will have a strong polymer synthesis and processing focus, involving the preparation of nanocomposites by various processing methods and understanding structure-property relationships. PhD 2 will be more concerned with biostability and biological interactions of the novel materials and their various components.

The project team (and supervisors) includes: A/Prof Darren Martin, Prof Rod Minchin and Prof Peter Halley from The University of Queensland; Dr Martin Svehla from Cochlear Ltd and Dr Ajay Padsalgikar from Aortech Biomaterials Pty Ltd. This project is funded by Cochlear, Aortech and the NHMRC.
Requirements: B.Eng., B.Sc. or Masters Degree in Materials or Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or Biomedical Engineering.
Remuneration: Stipend – APA equivalent (tax-free and indexed) for 3 yrs.
Anticipated Commencement Date: early 2009
